Over 42% of Americans now live in states with some form of legal relationship recognition for couples at the state level. But at the same time, no citizen has marriage equality at the federal level because the DOMA (Defense-of-Marriage Act) has outlawed same-gender couples nationwide since 1996.
President Barack Obama has done more to extend equality to LGBT citizens than all other presidents combined, yet Congress still lets employers in most states fire any worker for being LGBT, and military personnel suffer up to a 40% pay cut — whenever their spouse is of the same gender.
The 2012 presidential campaign may be the most homophobic in American history, with most Republicans vowing to restrict LGBT citizens.
Radio and TV broadcasters also demonize the 31 million LGBT Americans who only want the same freedoms that everyone else takes for granted, by giving frequent air time to lobbyists from certified hate groups which have no scientific evidence for the prejudices that they promote.
